Summer is moving quickly, but we still have plenty of hot Oklahoma days ahead. As temperatures climb, it is important to take a few simple precautions to protect ourselves and those around us.
Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, particularly among children, older adults and those with existing health conditions. Remember to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and take frequent breaks in a cool place. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, weakness or a rapid pulse can signal a serious heat-related illness and should not be ignored. I have seen symptoms like these come on very quickly, so please be as cautious as you can.
It is also important to take time to check on older family members, friends and neighbors, especially those who live alone or may not have reliable air conditioning. Children and pets also should never be left unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels much faster than many people realize.
While the Legislature is not currently in its regular session, our work continues throughout the interim. The months between legislative sessions give lawmakers time to meet with constituents, attend conferences, participate in interim studies and begin preparing ideas for the next session.
I recently attended the Council of State Governments Southern Legislative Conference, where lawmakers and policy experts shared how their states are addressing public safety, human services, energy and other regional challenges. These discussions offered ideas that could help us develop solutions that work for Oklahoma.
Interim studies also allow lawmakers to examine complicated issues in greater detail than the regular legislative schedule often permits. We can hear from experts, state agencies and members of the public before considering possible legislation. Just as importantly, the interim gives me more time to visit with the people I represent and hear their concerns directly.
I also want to remind you that my office is available to assist you with navigating our state government. While we cannot intervene in any legal matters, we can help constituents communicate with state agencies, locate available resources and determine where to begin when a state process becomes confusing.

I hope you all are having a wonderful summer. I have absolutely loved visiting with you all and hearing what you have to say. These conversations remind me what great people we have in our district and how lucky we are to call it home.
