Pauls Valley on the road to face playoff-hungry Star Spencer

When the Pauls Valley Panthers travel to face the Star Spencer Bobcats, the two teams will step onto the field with completely contrasting seasons—but equally high motivation.

“This is probably the best Star Spencer team, and best-coached Star Spencer team, I've seen in 12 years,” Head coach Mason Anthony said. “Their coaches have been doing an extra good job and their kids are playing hard. And I think like a lot of teams, they're learning how to win.”

After the heartbreaking 13-12 defensive battle against Idabel, Pauls Valley (1-6, 1-3 District) find their playoff hopes dashed with just three regular-season games remaining. Yet, records can be thrown out the window when standard spoiler roles take effect. The Panthers have a prime opportunity Thursday night to secure an elusive second win and reshape the district’s postseason landscape.

Meanwhile, Star Spencer (5-2, 2-2 District) is experiencing a historic renaissance. The Bobcats enter the matchup deadlocked in a fierce three-way tie for third place in the district standings alongside Idabel and Lone Grove. With postseason seeding on the line, every snap is critical for a Bobcat squad trying to secure a playoff spot and build on its best season in recent memory.

Breaking the Drought

To appreciate Star Spencer’s current 5-2 run, look to the history books. Over the last 15 years, the Bobcats have posted a 42-100 overall record, reaching five wins in only three of those seasons. The program is fighting to snap a 14-year playoff drought, last reaching the postseason in 2012.

It is a stark contrast to the program's golden era. Before 2012, Star Spencer was a perennial Oklahoma powerhouse, punching a postseason ticket 10 times in 13 years, highlighted by eight consecutive appearances and a 2009 State Championship victory over Douglass. This year's roster looks primed to bring that winning culture back to Spencer.

Series History Favors the Panthers

While the Bobcats have momentum this season, history favors Pauls Valley. The Panthers hold a 3-1 all-time series edge and have dominated recent matchups. Pauls Valley walloped the Bobcats 53-0 last season and won 45-28 in 2024. Star Spencer’s lone series win came over a decade ago, when they secured a 41-0 shutout in the initial 2014 meeting

Key Matchups to Watch

The Pauls Valley defense will have its hands full trying to contain an explosive Star Spencer offense. The Bobcats' recent box scores showcase a multi-dimensional offense that can hurt teams on the ground and through the air:

  • The Ground Game: Against Madill, running back Ziyan Jenkins was unstoppable, rushing for over 100 yards and scoring on 7- and 33-yard touchdown runs.
  • The Aerial Attack: Quarterback Malikhi Alexander has shown dynamic chemistry with his playmakers, connecting with Jenkins for a 7-yard touchdown pass against Seminole and unleashing a stunning 53-yard touchdown bomb against Lone Grove. Backup quarterback Kenny Hardesty has also proven lethal, adding a rushing touchdown against Seminole.

“Their quarterback’s (Alexander) a lot better than what we saw last year,” Anthony said. “He can throw the ball and they've got the receivers to get up under it and catch it. Kyler Jenkins is probably one of their best receivers. The receivers made some big plays against Idabel and in the win against Seminole.”

  • The Two-Way Threat: Perhaps Pauls Valley's biggest defensive priority is accounting for Kevin Orange. During the Bobcats' critical 3-1 stretch in September, Orange put together an elite all-around performance. Offensively, he accumulated 500 total yards (including 355 receiving yards) and 6 touchdowns. Defensively, he anchored the secondary with 11 tackles, 3 pass breakups, and 2 timely interceptions.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Moses Miller Stadium (2131 NE 10th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73117).
