As Jesus came to Jerusalem just days before His crucifixion (Matthew 21:1-11), large crowds began to welcome Him with great praises. Fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, Jesus came riding into the city on a donkey’s colt. A wonderful welcome was given to Jesus on this day. Notice just a portion of this narration.
“And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’ And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, ‘Who is this?’ So the multitudes said, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee,’” (Matthew 21:811).
Did you notice the question that was being asked in verse 10? Many people in the city were asking, “Who is this?” What an important question to ask as this great crowd was leading Jesus into the city of Jerusalem.
For 2,000 years, people have been asking the question, “Who is Jesus?” In our own day, there are some who have viewed themselves as “experts,” who are trying to change the Bible’s teaching of who Jesus is. You’ve seen them on television many times in their so called “biblical documentaries.” But instead of accepting their many falsehoods, let’s take a close look at what the Bible says about who Jesus really is.
First, He is the Son of God. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This “Word” is Jesus, according to verses 14 and 18 of this chapter.
Later in chapter 20, John states, “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”
His miracles stand as overwhelming evidence of who Jesus is. The Gospel of John tells of Jesus raising the dead, casting out demons, healing blind and lame people, walking on water, and much more. Then, in Mark 1:9-11, God Himself testified that Jesus is His Son.
These verses state, “It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, ‘You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’” Second, Jesus is our Savior. By shedding His blood on the cross, God’s Son purchased men from sin (Revelation 5:9). In the words of Jesus Himself, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
In speaking of Jesus, the people of Samaria said, “We ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world” (John 4:42). Thus, Scripture clearly shows us that Jesus is our Savior.
Third, Jesus will one day be our Judge. The fact that Jesus died for us brings a serious responsibility to each of us. We must be willing to obey Him. Jesus commanded, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). Surely this is not too much to ask from the One who died for us and who will one day be our Judge.
2 Corinthians 5:10 says, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” What we have chosen to do in our life will be presented before Jesus Christ, our Righteous Judge. Whether we obeyed the Lord or not will be considered as we give account of our lives before the Lord.
The standard has already been determined by which we shall be judged. It will be the Bible itself. Jesus said, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day” (John 12:48).
Jesus is the Son of God! Jesus is the One who paid for our sins at Calvary! Jesus will be our Judge in the last day! The great question is, “Have you obeyed Him?” We are here to help.
