An investigation into the May 26 shooting death of 25-year-old Rylee Shackelford, of Pauls Valley, has led to formal charges being filed against her husband, Kyle David Shackelford, 32.
Kyle Shackelford was charged with one felony count of first-degree manslaughter in Garvin County District Court Aug. 26. He is accused of causing Rylee’s death, “while being engaged in the misdemeanor of Possession of Firearm while Intoxicated.”
According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court Aug. 26, Garvin County sheriff’s deputies and Pauls Valley police officers were dispatched to the Pauls Valley Walmart just before 3 a.m. on May 26.
The affidavit states the caller, Kyle Shackelford, told dispatchers he accidentally shot his wife in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol at the residence they shared on North County Road 3210, west of Pauls Valley. He said he was in the truck with his wife, on the way to get medical attention, and agreed to meet an ambulance at the Pauls Valley Walmart.
Police later determined the truck carrying the couple was driven by Rylee’s father, who also lived at the residence.
The responding officers reported Rylee was unconscious and appeared to have a single gunshot wound to her left side under her armpit. She was transported by ambulance to an Oklahoma City trauma center where she died.
Law enforcement officers on scene took possession of a pistol located on the back seat of Kyle’s truck. According to the deputy who secured the firearm, it had one empty cartridge still chambered and three live cartridges loaded in the magazine.
The affidavit alleges Kyle had been drinking in the hours before the shooting, both at a local casino and with Rylee and others after returning home. A friend of the couple told investigators she left the home around 1:30 a.m. and Kyle, Rylee and Rylee’s father were the only people at the house when she left.
According to the affidavit, Kyle allegedly told investigators he and Rylee were fighting after a “friend of a friend” had called her phone. He said she was in the passenger side of his truck, and as he got in the driver’s side, he moved a pistol he had set on the console and it went off, firing one shot that hit Rylee in the left side.
Kyle Shackelford was arraigned on the manslaughter charge in Garvin County District Court Aug. 26. He plead not guilty and was released on a $100,000 bond.
