National Weather Service taking closer look at Pauls Valley storm damage

The National Weather Service took a closer look at storm damage today in the Pauls Valley area to determine whether a tornado touched down west of town early Sunday morning.

According to a statement from the NWS released on Facebook late Monday afternoon, intermittent wind damage was found in a nearly three-mile-long path along Royal Oaks Road (ECR 1580). Most of the damage is attributed to straight-line winds, though NWS is still conducting analysis to determine whether a very brief tornado touched down near the intersection of Royal Oaks Road and Klondike Road (ECR 3220).

The storm, which moved through around 2 a.m. Sunday, destroyed a small building that housed a hair salon near that intersection. Several other sheds, outbuildings and trees also sustained damage along Royal Oaks Road as the storm moved east toward Indian Meridian Road.

One of the buildings at the Sandpiper Apartment complex, located on Indian Meridian, just north of Royal Oaks Road, had significant roof damage.

Garvin County Emergency Management Director Dave Johnson said to his knowledge no other homes suffered structural damage and he is not aware of any reports of injuries related to the storm.

Minor damage was reported in other areas of Pauls Valley, including a tree blown over into the tennis courts at Wacker Park. About 100 electric customers on the northeast side of town were also without power until late Sunday afternoon.

The storm was part of a larger complex that moved through the area beginning Saturday evening. An earlier storm, which moved through the county around 11 p.m. Saturday, caused tree damage in Lindsay and Maysville, as well as power outages in Maysville, according to Johnson.

Johnson said the Pauls Valley and Rush Creek fire departments also responded to a call Saturday night for a lightning strike to a house near Whitebead.
