Scouts from Pauls Valley’s BSA Troop 73 spent the first few days of their Christmas break this week working on completing a sidewalk on the east side of Wacker Park that leads from the tennis courts to an adjacent parking area.
The sidewalk work is an Eagle Scout project led by scout Jakob Nirschl.
Nirschl, a junior at Pauls Valley High School, said he used to play tennis for Pauls Valley and was aware of the need for a connected sidewalk not only for accessibility but also to help keep dirt and debris off the courts, which were resurfaced in 2022.
When it came time to plan his Eagle Scout project, it seemed like a good fit.
“We came out and took measurements and did the math to see how many cubic yards of concrete we needed, and I went to a parks and tree board meeting with a proposal and got approval to do the project,” Nirschl said.
Work on the project got underway Saturday, as Nirschl and his troop spent the afternoon digging and building forms to frame two sections of new sidewalk. They were back at work Monday morning as the concrete was delivered, helping to move wheelbarrows of wet concrete into place and smoothing the walkway with trowels. The new sections will fill in gaps in two existing walkways, connecting them to create a continuous sidewalk from the parking area to the newly resurfaced tennis courts.
TH Rogers Lumber Company and L.A. Jacobson, Inc. donated materials to the project.
