School bonds on ballot for Sept. 14 Special Elections

Subhead

Early voting begins Thursday

Voters across the county will be going to the polls Sept. 14 to cast ballots in four special elections.

Lindsay voters will be deciding a four-way race for the City Council seat vacated by Lynn Scrugg’s resignation earlier this year. Candidates in that race are Aaron Aprill, Robert Brooks, Greg Henderson and Angel Wilbourn.

Lindsay will also have two school bond propositions on the ballot. The first is a $1 million bond issue that, if approved, will be used for STEM equipment, science and robotic labs and renovations to the district’s vocational agriculture building. The second Lindsay school bond proposition, in the amount of $580,000, is for the purchase of school buses and vehicles. If approved, both bonds will replace previous bonds set to expire this year and would not cause an increase in property taxes.

Maysville voters will be deciding a $600,000 school bond proposition. The bonds will be used to replace the district’s cinder track with a new five-lane all-weather track; make renovations to bathrooms at the football field, agriculture barn and gymnasium; purchase new band uniforms and instruments; and update scoreboards at the softball, baseball and football fields. Maysville’s bond proposition is also replacing existing bonds and will not increase current property tax rates.

The Garvin County District 1 Commissioner race is also set for special election Sept. 14. Republican candidate Randy Chandler and Democratic candidate Kevin Foraker are vying to fill the remainder of District 1 Commissioner Kenneth Holden’s term, following his retirement earlier this year.

Voters who will not be able to make it to the polls on Sept. 14 have the option of voting early at the County Election Board.

“You do not need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted through the State Election Board—from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a great option for those who will be out of town on Election Day or who want to avoid long lines,” Garvin County Election Board Secretary Gayla Dean said.

Early voting is available Thursday, Sept. 9, and Friday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the County Election Board located at 201 W. Grant, Room 8. Dean reminds voters that early voting is not available at polling locations.

Regular polling places will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 14.
