Maysville police unit damaged in high-speed pursuit

A police pursuit that started in Purcell Wednesday afternoon flew through the center of Maysville and resulted in damage to one of Maysville’s police cruisers before the suspect was apprehended near Highway 19 and Hatfield Road, just west of Maysville.

Maysville Police Chief Paul Bush said his department was contacted by McClain County deputies early Wednesday afternoon requesting assistance in the pursuit of a Dodge Charger allegedly stolen from the Norman area as it moved south toward Maysville on Highway 74. Speeds are estimated to have reached up to 130 mph at times.

Bush said his officers did not have time to mobilize and set out stop sticks, but two Maysville units picked up the chase on the north edge of Maysville near 2nd and Ripley (Highway 74).

As the suspect reached the intersection of Highway 74 and Highway 19, traffic was bottle-necked at the four-way stop. The suspect cut through a gas station parking lot on the corner at 50 to 60 mph and headed west on Highway 19.

Sgt. Sheryl Fields with the Maysville Police Department followed the suspect through the stop sign. As Bush proceeded through the intersection behind her, his unit was hit on the passenger side by another motorist unrelated to the pursuit.

Bush continued the pursuit, which ended when the suspect pulled over and surrendered near Hatfield Road. The driver was taken into custody, and two female passengers were released.

After the suspect was apprehended, Bush returned to the intersection of Highway 74 and 19, where the motorist who had broadsided his unit had pulled over and waited for additional officers to arrive. Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers worked that accident.
