Lindsay Animal Shelter hosting ‘Fur Angel Tree’ to help defray costs

The Lindsay Animal Shelter is hosting a “Fur Angel Tree” to raise funds and supplies to help care for animals currently housed at the shelter.

Lindsay animal control officer Samantha Randol said shelter resources have been depleted in recent months as the shelter has provided board and medical care to nearly 40 cats and dogs confiscated in June as part of a local court case. The animals can’t be adopted out because the case is still making its way through the court system.

Randol, shelter volunteers and a local veterinary clinic have worked to rehabilitate many of the animals, making sure they put on weight and issues like flea and tick dermatitis and other skin infections are addressed.

“There’s just a lot that goes into their care,” Randol said. “We had one dog that was so crate-bound he could hardly walk. Now he’s walking six blocks a day. Rain or shine, we walk.”

While the veterinary clinic is donating office visits and medical care, the shelter has still accrued $2,800 in charges for necessary medications and vaccines.

“Our local vet has been amazing at helping with whatever we need,” Randol said.

Many of the animals also have dental issues, making it necessary to feed them wet food instead of the dry food the shelter normally stocks. Randol estimates food costs over the last six months are in excess of $20,000 – much of that provided by donations.

Randol said there are several ways the community donate to the “Fur Angel Tree” to help the shelter with expenses and supplies:

•Monetary donations to help with veterinary bills can be made at Lindsay Veterinary Hospital, 806 S.E. 4th Street, Lindsay, Okla. 73052.

•Donations of Pedigree wet dog food (ground and bites), wet cat food, non-clumping cat litter, bleach, and blankets and towels can be dropped off at the Lindsay Animal Shelter, 101 E. Kiowa, in Lindsay. The shelter is also willing to pick up collected donations. Call 405-756-6337 for more information.

•Monetary donations for supplies can also be made to the shelter’s account at Dutton Farm and Supply, 405 S.E. 4th Street, in Lindsay.
