Undefeated Wynnewood Savages claim District Championship title

The Wynnewood Savages defeated Walters 52-0 last Friday night, securing the 2025 District A-I-2 Championship and capping off a perfect 10-0 regular season.

Wynnewood set the tone of the game on the first play when Phoenix Delaplain connected with Briar Davenport for a 52-yard touchdown pass, taking the lead 7-0. The Savages’ defense kept the momentum going by forcing the Blue Devil offense to a three and out on the first series.

The second series for Wynnewood showcased some impressive running behind a very physical offensive line. Davenport, Aydrian Knighten and Da’Zhon Jones moved the ball deep into Blue Devil territory allowing Delaplain to take advantage of the short field and walk in for a second touchdown of the night, putting Wynnewood up 14-0.

The Blue Devils were able to move the ball slowly down the field on the next series before Davenport snatched a Blue Devil pass and ran it back for an 88-yard pick-six, increasing Wynnewood’s lead to 21-0.

On the next series, the Blue Devils stalled out on the drive and the Savages took the ball over after a short punt on the Wynnewood 32-yard line. The Savages’ next drive showcased Delaplain’s speed as he ran through the massive holes in Walters’ offensive line to gain yardage. Wynnewood’s Luke Stevenson took the ball straight up the middle of the Blue Devil defensive line and a made quick 22-yard jaunt for a touchdown.

With Wynnewood leading by 28 points and Walters unable to get anything going against the strong Savage defense early in the second quarter, both teams grew increasingly chippy on the field and several penalties were called against both sides.

Walters punted the ball again and Wynnewood took over on their own 38-yard line. Knighten took the lead on the series and scored on a scramble run to increase Wynnewood’s lead to 35-0. Walters’ next drive went nowhere and they punted the ball again to Wynnewood. The Savages marched down the field and stalled out due to penalties before scoring on a field goal to make the game score 38-0 going into halftime.

Walters’ first third-quarter drive stalled out, and Wynnewood began the second half on the Walters’ side at the 45-yard line. Wynnewood’s Jones ran the ball to the 16-yard line, deep into Blue Devil territory, and Knighten finished the drive off with a touchdown pulling the score to 45-0.

Jones scored the last touchdown on a 29-yard run thru the middle of the Blue Devil defense. Half way into the third quarter, with a 52-0 lead, Wynnewood let off the gas and started to pull first team players out to sub in second and third team players.

After the game as coaches and players huddled up to celebrate the perfect season, Wynnewood Head Coach Brad O’Steen congratulated the team on their undefeated season, telling them he was proud of the hard work they have put in and the way they have performed this season, but reminded them the work isn’t done yet.

“We are 10-0 on the season, but tomorrow the real season starts and we are 0-0,” O’Steen said.

Wynnewood will host Sayre this week for the first round of the OSSAA State Championship Playoffs. Sayre is 6-4 on the season and coming off a 58-14 victory against Hinton last week. Sayre has wins this season over Cordell, Carnegie, Crescent, Merritt and Watonga.
