Teams double up for Wacker Tennis Classic

Twenty doubles teams took to the tennis courts at Wacker Park Sept. 27 as the Pauls Valley Tennis and Racquet Association hosted the Wacker Tennis Classic.

Local players took home most of the medals, but the fundraiser tournament had nice representation from several out of area guests as well, according to organizers.

Those included a former Pauls Valley Panthers doubles team from 1967, James Robinson, now of Durant, and Jim Schnorrenberg, now living in Edmond.

“James even had a photo of the 1967 tennis team, which obviously included Jim and him,” PVTRA President Matt Hamilton said. “James indicated that he had helped bring buckets of concrete to help construct the west side courts back in the ’60s.”

There were also two youthful team entries from Ada/Byng who showed promise as they tested some of Pauls Valley's strong adult players.

The youngest player in the event was Jagger Scott, a seventh grader who finished second in the Intermediate/Recreation bracket and just out of the medals in fourth in the Classic bracket.

“Pauls Valley Panther Tennis has bright future with players like Jagger emerging,” Hamilton said.

The Classic bracket featured doubles play with the old standard size (small) tennis racquet head.
