Savages start district play beating the Bearcats 56-14

Wynnewood kicked off district play with a decisive 56-14 victory over Hobart.

“It’s a great team win,” Phoenix Delaplain said. “We came together and got it done. We continue to execute and get better.”

Briar Davenport scored four of the Savage touchdowns.

“We executed our game plan and won pretty good,” Davenport said.

Davenport also had two other runs that reached the endzone but were called back.

“We just didn’t execute our game plan and got called back, but we’ll get that fixed and turn it into 6 points instead of penalties,” he said.

Jeremiah Martinez successfully kicked all eight extra-point attempts.

The Savages dominated from the beginning. The Bearcats received the kickoff but fumbled on third down with Wynnewood’s Jett Anderson recovering the ball.

With just over 5 minutes left in the first quarter, Davenport caught a pass for a 60-yard touchdown.

The Bearcats fumbled again on the kickoff, with Wynnewood recovering possession. That drive ended with Davenport scoring on a short 3-yard run.

Early in the second quarter, Davenport scored on a 74-yard run.

“The linemen opened a hole for me, and it’s my job to get 6 points,” Davenport said.

Hobart finally found the endzone on a 17-yard run with eight minutes left in the half.

The Savages answered immediately with a scoring drive that ended with Luke Stevenson scoring on a 6-yard run.

“The line blocked good, and I saw a big old hole, and I ran through it,” Stevenson said.

Wynnewood’s next drive was a 40-yard run from Da’zhon Jones to the endzone.

With under a minute left in the first half, Delaplain found Davenport on a 30-yard pass.

“Great work by the receivers and excellent protection from the line makes my job easy,” Delaplain said.

In the third quarter, Aydrian Knighten ran in a 2-yard touchdown, and Deagan Dixon ran in a 55-yard touchdown.

Hobart scored again in the fourth quarter and successfully made the two-point conversion.
