Pauls Valley’s outstanding defensive play pushed the Panthers to a runaway win over the Dickson Comets last week. Pauls Valley struck first after Rayne Major blocked a Comet punt that was recovered at the Dickson 30-yard line. Pauls Valley’s Justin Humphrey connected with Jorge Fabela on a 20-yard touchdown pass to put the Panthers up 7-0.
The Panther defense gave the offense a gift on the next score. The Panthers’ Major again took advantage of a Comet mistake and grabbed a missed snap to the quarterback and set the Panther offense up on the Comet 4-yard line. Humphrey ran the ball in for the touchdown to extend the lead to 13-0.
Dickson was able to get a drive together and score on a quarterback run through the middle of the Panther defense for a touchdown. The Comet extra point attempt hit the upright, leaving the score 13-6.
The Panthers bounced right back with a Humphrey to Maddex Prince pass for a 15-yard touchdown. The twopoint conversion attempt failed to make the score 19-6.
The Panthers forced the Comets into a punt situation and the Comets mishandled the snap to the punter, putting the Panther offense in great field position again at the Comet 14-yard line. Pauls Valley’s Prince scored on a 14-yard run to extend the Panther lead to 26-6. The Panthers again took advantage of another Comet mistake with five seconds to go in the half. The Comets threw a pass to the near side of the field, but behind the line of scrimmage where the Comet receiver did not catch the ball. Pauls Valley’s Jackson Coates seized the opportunity and grabbed the ball from the ground, running it back for a 56-yard touchdown to a 33-6 halftime score.
The Comets turned the ball over on downs on the first series after halftime, and the Panthers marched down the field to score on a Humphrey 1-yard run to make the score 40-6.
On the kickoff after the score the Comet kick returner fumbled the ball and Panther Adrian Gonzalez recovered it on the Comet 18-yard line. The Panthers’ Tanner Perry moved the ball down the field and scored on a quarterback run from the 5-yard line for the touchdown to bring the score to 47-6.
The Comets were able to take advantage of a Panther turnover late in the third quarter and scored a touchdown from the 5-yard line to make the final score 47-13.
Pauls Valley looks to correct some mistakes that were made last week and get another district win at home this week as they host Douglass. Douglass is 2-6 on the season after a lopsided 49-8 loss to Lone Grove last week. Kickoff is at 7 p.m
