This week, I had the opportunity to attend the Council of State Governments (CSG) Southern Legislative Conference (SLC), where lawmakers from 15 Southern states gather to discuss policy solutions and share ideas on the issues affecting our region.
As a member of the SLC Human Services and Public Safety Committee, I value the opportunity to learn from fellow legislators, industry experts and policy leaders about challenges that impact Oklahoma families and communities.
One of this year’s primary focuses was the future of energy and the South’s role in powering America’s continued growth. Speakers this year discussed how increased demand from artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and population growth is reshaping our nation’s energy needs. We also explored energy reliability, workforce development and ways states can balance reliable, affordable power while supporting continued economic growth.
As we move through the summer months, I wanted to share a few updates on investments that are making a real difference here at home.
Earlier this month, every county sheriff’s office in Oklahoma received grant funding through a program the Legislature established in 2024. In total, $18 million was awarded statewide, with grants ranging from $150,000 to $300,000 based on each county’s tangible property valuation.
I am proud that Cleveland and McClain counties each received $300,000, while Garvin County received $250,000.
These funds can be used for equipment, technology, training, facility improvements and other operational needs, giving local sheriffs the flexibility to address the unique needs of their departments. Supporting law enforcement is one of the most important responsibilities of state government, and these investments help ensure our communities remain safe while providing our officers with the resources they need to serve effectively.
I am also excited to share that the Oklahoma Transportation Commission recently approved the County Improvements for Roads and Bridges Plan for fiscal years 2027 through 2031. The updated five-year plan includes nearly $950 million in improvements to county roads and bridges across all 77 counties.
Throughout the life of the plan, Cleveland, McClain and Garvin counties will see a number of road and bridge improvements that will support our local infrastructure.
Established by the Legislature and administered by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, the program will replace or rehabilitate 238 county bridges and improve 808 miles of county roadways statewide in total. Projects are selected based on need and funded through partnerships among state, federal, local and tribal governments.
I am proud of both of these investments to our district as they are the kinds of investments that make our community stronger while preparing us for tomorrow.
Aside from local investments, I hope you are all enjoying the slower pace that summer often brings. One of my favorite parts of the season is the time when peaches are just right. A basket of peaches has a way of bringing people together around the table, reminding us that the sweetest things in life are often meant to be shared.
In many ways, strong communities grow the same way. They are built through kindness, helping one another and taking time to check on our neighbors. I hope your summer is filled with those simple moments that remind us how blessed we are to call Oklahoma home.
