Velma Jean “Nanny” Underwood was born on February 16, 1932, in Maysville, Oklahoma, to Herbert “Pat” and Emma (Gardner) Murphy, and passed away on May 19, 2024, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, at the age of 92 years, three months, and three days. Jean was raised and attended school in Maysville. On March 20, 1947, she married Jack Underwood in Wayne, Oklahoma, in a double wedding ceremony. Jean remained in the Maysville area until the age of 79, when she moved to the Savannah Park Apartments in Healdton, Oklahoma, where she made countless friends. She remained in Healdton until the past twelve years when she moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma. Jean loved flowers and flower gardens. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, watching soap operas and Westerns. Jean also enjoyed parties. Jean enjoyed traveling and she made many memories with her family along the way. She looked forward to the family’s annual trip to Colorado. Jean also took a memorable trip with her daughter to Phoenix, Arizona, taking two days to get there, but eight days to get back. They made many stops along Route 66 and she enjoyed every minute of it.
Nothing brought Jean more joy to her than her family. She enjoyed the time she spent with family, especially her grandchildren. She truly enjoyed being Nanny. Jean will be dearly missed.
Survived by her daughter, Jackie Underwood Woulfe; son, Casey Underwood and Maxine; grandchildren, Jennifer Woulfe, Kendra Woulfe and Ian Bailey, Eli Moore, Jade Buchanan and Brad, Brandy Milligan, Sean Underwood and Kara Cardinalle, Samantha Flanigan and David, Jonathan Ashley and Summer, and Geoffrey Ashley; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; caregiver, Terry Gordon; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Emma Murphy; husband, Jack Underwood; infant daughter, Patricia Underwood; daughter, Jo Linda Underwood Dudley; grandson, JC Underwood; son-in-law, Joe Woulfe; and siblings, Mina, Bessie, Noel, Wayne, Pete, and Ray.
