Aubrey B. Popejoy was born December 1, 1953, to Harvey and Dorothy Popejoy. He was raised in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, and graduated high school there. He is survived by his wife, Linda Popejoy. They were married on December 31, 2001. Aubrey and Linda traveled together as a pair. They loved traveling and seeing things together. They often took the kids and grandkids with them. Aubrey had four children and eight grandchildren. His children include Stonie Popejoy and wife, Pamela Popejoy; Dustin Popejoy; Sarah McCarty and husband, Lucas McCarty; and Andy Swafford. His grandchildren are Ashley Aldridge, Lawson Popejoy, Brendon McCarty, Dustin Mann, Breanna Swafford, Nicolas McCarty, Braden Swafford and Olive Swafford. Aubrey loved spending his time sitting in the rocking chairs and swinging with his wife, Linda, at home, watching the sunset and animals, whether it be in Pauls Valley or somewhere on the road. In Colorado he would always feed the squirrels peanuts. Rainy days were his favorite. His favorite holiday was Christmas, and he always started singing Christmas songs in July. He loved music, listening to the news and catching up on the newspaper when he got the chance.
He was a generous and loving man with a servant’s heart; he would give the shirt off his back to those he cared about. He served on the Rural Water District 4 board and was a member of Kiwanis. He was also a great friend to the Pauls Valley Historical Society, being instrumental in the revitalization of the Santa Fe Depot area. There is a plaque dedicated to him in front of the train at the depot park.
Aubrey passed away June 14, 2024. No services were held per his request. He didn’t want anyone to mourn him, just carry on with your days. He was a no-fuss man, just get the job done. He was laid to rest in Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. He loved his dogs Luke and Keko. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Pauls Valley Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.) or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
There’s so much to be said about his life, we could use the whole paper. His joys in life were his family, seeing them happy and smiling. He was a great man. There’s so much more to a man than a name! Linda would also like to thank the friends, family, his employees and the staff at Washita Valley Living Center for their hard work and love for Aubrey and her. It means more than you will ever know.
