Garvin County 4-H youth test meat science and livestock skills

Garvin County 4-H members had the opportunity to test their knowledge of meat science and overall livestock management last month, as they competed in the local Meats Identification and Livestock Skill-A-Thon contests.

Both contests were held April 6 at the Garvin County Fairgrounds. In Meats Identification, participants identify retail cuts of meat by species—such as beef, pork and lamb—name and primal cut.

The Livestock Skill-AThon, a new addition for Garvin County youth this year, tests knowledge of animal science, breeding, nutrition and management across multiple species, and is designed to improve decision making and practical skills in livestock production for youth, regardless of whether they own animals.
