Ninth-grade students at Pauls Valley Junior High School recently visited the Oklahoma Supreme Court as part of their continued study of state government. The purpose of the trip was to deepen students’ understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the judicial branch within the state of Oklahoma.
This unique educational experience was made possible through a connection between PVJH staff member April Brown and Gina Antipov, director of Court Services. After a chance meeting and conversation, contact information was exchanged, and Ms. Antipov graciously explored the possibility of organizing a tour for PVJH students. Through her coordination and support, this conversation ultimately developed into an incredible opportunity for PVJH ninth graders.
During their visit, students began their tour by meeting several of the justices of the Court. They were then invited into three different courtrooms where the justices explained their roles and responsibilities within the judicial branch and discussed how the judicial branch interprets and applies state law.
Students also had the distinct honor of sharing lunch with Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court Dustin Rowe. During lunch, Rowe spoke with students about the importance of the judiciary and invited them to ask questions about the Court and the legal system. He later posed a few questions of his own to the students, awarding official insignia to those who answered correctly. The interaction provided students with a memorable and meaningful opportunity to engage directly with a member of the state’s highest court.
To further enhance their understanding of state government, PVJH ninth-grade students will also visit the Oklahoma State Capitol later this month, where they will meet with legislators and continue exploring the legislative process in action.
