Gentri Condit wanted to be like her older brother when she asked Elmore City-Pernell coaches to add powerlifting for girls.
“I was in seventh grade. I wanted to try it, but we didn’t have a girls team,” she said.
The Badgers already had a boys team where her brother, Cutter Condit, competed.
Lady Badger powerlifting now has two high school girls and six junior high girls.
Gentri Condit first competed in powerlifting as an eighth-grader and placed fourth at the junior high state meet. She won the junior high state title in ninth grade.
Now competing at the high school level, the sophomore hopes to break the state record for the bench press, which is currently at 165 lbs.
At the Longhorn Invitational Meet in Jones, Condit won the 155 weight class. Her 140 bench press was more than anyone else in the division, regardless of school size.
The bench is her favorite portion of the powerlifting meets. “I’m a catcher, so I build up my arms,” Condit said. “To me, it’s an easier lift. I feel like I have more muscles in my arms.”
Condit’s main sport is softball, where she plays catcher for the Lady Badgers and a travel team.
Condit also plays basketball and throws the shot put. Squats are her least favorite lift due to previous surgeries on her knees.
