Community service focus of MLK holiday celebration

Area residents and elected officials gathered at Wynnewood’s High School Cafeteria Jan. 17 to celebrate the theme of community service at the Garvin County 13th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration, hosted by Hopewell Church of Wynnewood.

The program included a welcome by Wynnewood Senior Center Director Charlene Weeks and response by Pauls Valley Mayor Jocelyn Rushing.

Southern Oklahoma Development Association Director Dr. Steven Mills and Hennipen United Pentecostal Church Pastor Shawn Phillips offered scripture reading and prayer, followed by musical selections from State Rep. Tammy Townley and Aquanetta Wilson. Speakers included State Rep. Cynthia Roe, who delivered the commemorative speech, and Wynnewood Mayor Keith Huitt, who issued a call to action and challenged those present to continue the conversation on civil rights.

During the luncheon, Wynnewood Senior Center Director Charlene Weeks was honored with the Hopewell Church Community Award for her volunteer efforts to keep the Wynnewood Nutrition Program up and running.
