Warriors defeat Pugs 46-18

With Paoli’s field decked in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Maysville beat the Pugs 46-18.

“We came into the game with injuries from last week,” said Paoli coach Lance Sumner. “The guys fought, and I am proud of their effort, but the chips didn’t fall. Hopefully, everyone will be back next week, and we’ll be back in the hunt for the playoffs.”

The Warriors’ opening drive ended with Gavin Martin running in a 20-yard touchdown and Ryan Johnson scoring the conversion.

“I followed the blockers and found a hole where I needed to go, and they made the right hits, so I didn’t get injured,” Martin said.

Paoli responded with a scoring drive of their own. Cobey Williamson scored a 4-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed.

“I had two lead blockers in front of me, and I followed them into the endzone,” Williamson said.

Johnson scored a 26-yard touchdown and the twopoint conversion.

Maysville’s Kash Brown intercepted a pass by Paoli’s Braxton Compton to stop the Pugs’ offensive drive.

The first quarter ended with a score of 16-6.

“It started off smooth, but got kind of rough. They kept holding us off on offense,” said Paoli’s Williamson.

After a drive that took half the second quarter, Johnson ran in a 7-yard touchdown and another two-point conversion.

The Warriors stopped the Pugs by recovering a fumble.

Compton ended Maysville’s drive, intercepting a pass batted off-course by John Fowler.

Brown also recovered a Pugs’ fumble.

Paoli opened the second half with a scoring drive. Compton scored on a 2-yard quarterback keep, but failed the two-point conversion.

On the following kickoff, Compton recovered possession for Paoli and found the endzone two plays later. The two-point conversion failed because Compton had the ball in his outside hand, and the ref deemed the ball out before crossing into the endzone.

This put the score at 24-18, the closest it was in the second half.

Maysville responded with Martin scoring a 14-yard touchdown and Johnson converting the two points. The Warriors then recovered their own onside kick. Johnson found the endzone again for another touchdown and two-point conversion.

In the beginning of the fourth quarter, Paoli got down to first and goal on the 6-yard line, but the Warriors pushed them back to the 14-yard line, and the ball was turned over on downs.

Johnson connected with Martin for a 4-yard touchdown pass. Paoli’s Lane Branscum intercepted the two-point conversion pass.

The Warriors move to 2-4 overall and 2-0 in district. Maysville will now face Sasakwa (5-1, 2-0).

“The score was pretty good, but we got a lot of work to do to get better,” said quarterback Ryan Johnson.

Paoli drops to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in district. The Pugs will now face Graham-Dustin (0-6, 0-2).
