On the road for Oklahoma

OPINION/COLUMN

This past week has been a busy one, but it has also been full of opportunities to learn, grow and connect with others who share a passion for serving their communities.

The week began in Washington, D.C., where members of the Oklahoma House Republican Caucus attended the White House State Leadership Conference. The experience provided an opportunity to meet with Oklahoma’s congressional delegation and members of the Trump administration.

Sessions were very informative, and it was encouraging to hear directly from cabinet members about the issues affecting Oklahomans and how state and federal leaders can continue building strong partnerships.

Along with these important conversations, the trip also included some lighter moments, such as dinner with friends at The Oceanaire Seafood Room.

Following Washington, the next stop was Denver, Colorado, for the Milbank Fellows Program. This 10-month leadership program brings together state leaders who are committed to improving health in their communities.

As a veteran nurse and chair of the House Public Health Committee, the program offers a valuable chance for me to build on a lifetime of healthcare experience while working alongside colleagues from across the country.

Participants of the program get to gain new knowledge about population health issues, evidencebased approaches to address them and ways to strengthen leadership skills to make a greater impact.

The program also provides opportunities to build lasting friendships and connections that will continue to benefit Oklahoma, and I am truly excited to be part of such a distinguished group of leaders who share a deep commitment to improving public health and serving our communities.

Both of these experiences highlight the importance of continued learning, listening and building relationships so that I can turn around and bring them right back here to our great state.

As October begins, I want you to know how truly thankful I am for each of you. I feel so blessed to represent District 42, and experiences like this past week’s learning opportunities only deepen my appreciation for our community.

Our district is remarkable, and the spirit of coming together here is something truly special. Thank you for your continued support and dedication.
