Early morning storms leave trail of wind and hail damage across county
Garvin County residents and local authorities are cleaning up and assessing damage caused by severe thunderstorms that moved across the area early Saturday morning.
The storms, which moved through the area between 2:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday, dumped large amounts of rain and hail and packed wind gusts in excess of 60 mph.
The storms downed powerlines and snapped power poles across southern Oklahoma, including in parts of Garvin County.
As of 7:30 p.m. Saturday, OG&E reported they still had about 1,350 customers in their service area without power, with high winds and continuing rain slowing efforts to restore power in some areas of the state. Those customers were expected to have power restored by 10 p.m. Sunday.
In Garvin County, emergency management officials said tree damage was widespread and at least eight structures were destroyed by the storms. Officials said that number is expected to go up as damage assessments continue.
One residence north of Wynnewood was significantly damaged and is not currently habitable, according to emergency management.
No injuries related to the storm had been reported as of Saturday evening.
Emergency management officials are asking anyone with damage due to the storm to report it at damage.ok.gov.
