Wynnewood voters approve sales tax hike, Whitebead passes bond proposition

Wynnewood voters passed a half-cent sales tax proposition Tuesday by a nearly 3-to-1 margin.

The proposition, which will bring the city’s sales tax to 4.5%, passed 107 to 37.

The 144 votes cast in the election represent around 12% of the 1189 voters registered inside Wynnewood’s city limits, according to figures from the Garvin County Election Board.

The additional revenue generated by the sales tax will be used to support general municipal government functions.

Wynnewood Mayor Keith Huitt said Wednesday he was pleased the measure passed.

“I feel it will allow us to better serve the needs of our citizens and pay off debt,” Huitt said.

Voters in the Whitebead School District also went the polls Tuesday, passing a $205,000 bond issue 67 to 16, with over 80% of voters casting ballots in favor of the proposition.

The 83 ballots cast in that election represent about 9% of the 887 registered voters in the Whitebead school district, according to figures from the county election board.

Whitebead’s bond issue will be used to purchase technology equipment, instructional software, textbooks and classroom furniture for the district.

All election night results are considered unofficial until provisional ballots are counted and the results are certified by the county election board. Results will be certified after 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16.
