Filing period for state and county offices begins April 13

Candidate filing begins April 13 for federal, state, legislative, judicial, district attorney, and county offices.

In Garvin County, offices due for election this year include (4-year terms): County Commissioner District 1 and 3, County Assessor and County Treasurer.

In-person filing for county offices will be available at the Garvin County Courthouse, located at 201 W. Grant in Pauls Valley, on April 13-15 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Election Board Secretary Gayla Dean said candidates that choose to file in-person should complete their Declaration of Candidacy and other required documents prior to arriving at the courthouse.

Filing packets can be downloaded from the State Election Board website at elections.ok.gov. Candidates are required to submit a signed and notarized Declaration of Candidacy, along with a non-refundable filing fee of $300, in the form of a cashier's check or certified check made payable to “Secretary of the County Election Board.” Personal checks and cash cannot be accepted.

Dean said all candidate filings, whether mailed or submitted in-person, must be received no later than 5 p.m. on April 15. No exceptions can be made.

The Garvin County Election Board staff can conduct an unofficial review of a candidate's Declaration of Candidacy and filing fee (cashier's check or certified check), or petition to ensure these documents are in good order prior to the filing period.

To have paperwork and checks reviewed, please follow the instructions below:

•Scan the documents you would like reviewed.

•Attach the documents to an email.

•Type "Candidate Filing Review" in the subject line.

•Send the email to garvincounty@elections.ok.gov before noon Tuesday, April 12.

Election Board staff will review the documents and notify candidates if there are any potential problems.

The filing period for federal, state, legislative, judicial, and district attorney offices will also be April 13-15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Candidates filing for those offices will file with the Secretary of the State Election Board at the State Capitol, located at 2300 N. Lincoln Boulevard, Oklahoma City. Filing will take place on the ground floor, in the east hallway of the State Capitol.

Candidate filing packets for those offices are also available on the State Election Board website or may be picked-up in-person at election board offices. To file for office, candidates must submit the following:

•declaration of candidacy – signed and notarized

•filing fee (cashier’s check or certified check only) or a petition supporting candidacy

•required supplemental forms (if applicable)

Oklahoma State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax said candidates should thoroughly review all qualifications which are included in the candidate filing packet and on the State Election Board website.

“Party affiliation requirements and residency requirements for State Senator, State Representative and County Commissioner have been modified due to redistricting. Also, some candidates’ districts may have changed,” Ziriax reminded candidates.

Those with questions or concerns regarding their eligibility should consult an attorney or their legal counsel.

A candidate filing checklist is included in the packet for the convenience of candidates.
