The Warriors opened the football season with a road victory last week over Bray-Doyle, 34-12. The Warriors’ defense held strong throughout the game and helped the offense, which struggled early in the game, by not allowing the Donkeys to gain any momentum. Defensive junior Kolby Wyatt had four tackles, a forced fumble and a punt block. Sophomore Patricio Recendiz had five and a half tackles. Senior Gabe Recendiz had three and a half tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Warrior defense forced the Donkeys to be a one-dimensional team by not allowing them to get a passing game going. The Donkeys rely on the threat of a deep pass to keep the opponents’ defense honest. The Donkeys’ only points scored were by mistakes the Warriors made. One miscue was a fumble that lead to a Donkey touchdown and the other was a punt return for a touchdown

The Warrior offense played well after a slow start, racking up over 430 yards of offense and over 340 of the total in rushing. Bo Green accounted for the most rushing yards with 150 and three touchdowns. Nigel Reid ran for 80 yards and a touchdown. James McGregor added another 73 yards rushing, 63 receiving yards and a touchdown. The Warrior offense seemed to have beginning-of-the-season jitters throughout the first half.

“The guys were just making mental mistakes by missing assignments,” Maysville coach Dace Lemieux said.

This Friday the Warriors welcome the Central High Bronchos to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Bronchos are coming off a win last week against Paoli, 32-14. The Bronchos are a young, tough team that relies heavily on their big offensive line to open holes up for their running game. The Bronchos prefer to use size and strength to move the ball down the field for scores instead of a big passing attack. The Warrior defensive line will need to establish their dominance early and get to the ball in the Broncho backfield, disrupting any plays they try to make before they happen. This game will be a good matchup between the offensive and defensive lines.

The Warriors are also taking donations of laundry supplies, so they can keep their jerseys clean and stain free. Everyone coming to the game can help the Warriors out by donating liquid or powder laundry detergents and stain removers.
