The town of Maysville plans to make the jump from dumpsters to polycarts for residential trash collection in the next few weeks.
The Maysville Board of Trustees voted during a special meeting Aug. 12 to accept a proposal from Hoffman Sanitation Services to provide the town’s trash collection service. According to the proposal, the new service will offer polycarts to most residential customers, or dumpsters in 2-, 3-, 4-, 6-, or 8-yard sizes, typically used by commercial customers.
The company is based in Durant, with installations in the Marlow and Bray area, and includes much of southern Oklahoma in its service area.
Maysville has been struggling to maintain its municipal trash service over the last few months as the town’s two trash trucks have become inoperable and the has been unable to cover the cost of repairs or replacement.
During the Aug. 12 meeting, the board opened sealed bids and heard from representatives of three companies identified by trustee David Uhles during the meeting as the top contenders, including GFL, Hoffman Sanitation Services and Premier Waste. Aside from information provided by the vendors, specifics of the sealed bids were not shared publicly during the meeting.
Uhles asked representatives of the three companies to speak about what makes them stand out because the “pricing is pretty close.”
Details provided by each company during the meeting also seemed to indicate the services were very similar.
During his presentation, Hoffman Sanitation’s representative told the board new polycarts and dumpsters had been ordered and would take about two weeks to arrive, giving the service a startup date of two-to-three-weeks out.
“In the meantime, we can help you do whatever you need done, if you still need help until we get started,” he said.
Uhles said later in the meeting, the offer of help was a deciding factor for him.
The company has since delivered a roll-off dumpster to Maysville for the town to deposit trash in.
During the meeting, the Hoffman representative said the service would also include three roll-off dumpsters per year for use by the town, to be set at times designated by town officials, as well as a once per year bulk pickup day for items such as large limbs or furniture.
The representative told the board the company can also maintain a list of addresses where residents are handicapped, disabled or elderly and drivers can help with getting those polycarts to the truck on pickup day, and that dumpsters do have the option of being locked.
Under the contract, Hoffman will bill the town of Maysville for services and residents will continue to be billed by the Maysville Municipal Authority.
The Mayville Board of Trustees has not yet disclosed what the rates for trash service will be under the new contract, but Mayor Cindy White said she hopes to address that during an upcoming special meeting.
