Maysville Elementary School has broken ground on a new safe room and multipurpose room.
The building, funded by a $1.54 million bond issue passed by voters in May 2025, will be on the southeast corner of the elementary complex.
“We’re very grateful for the voters to be able to do this,” Principal John Edwards said.
Currently, the elementary uses the same room for physical education and the cafeteria.
“There will be plenty of space for P.E. and for different clubs to hold events after hours,” Edwards said.
The extra space will be very appreciated by staff throughout the school day.
“We want the kids to be as safe as possible, and not having lunch and P.E. at the same time will be great,” said Mandee Anderson, reading interventionist.
The elementary does not currently have a safe room. This new building will fit all students and staff during a weather emergency during school hours. Outside of school hours, the safe room will be available for the community.
Anderson has family members who do not have a safe room in their home.
“For them to be able to come a couple of blocks to be safe from the tornado is wonderful,” she said.
