OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Jason Lowe, D-OKC, released the following statement Monday after the World Health Organization classified the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, as a variant of concern.
The Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa on Nov. 9. There are not any known cases of the Omicron variant in the U.S. at this time, however, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical advisor, the Omicron variant making its way to the U.S. is ‘inevitable.’
“Thanks to the vaccine our daily life has seemingly gone back to normal, but the threat of COVID-19 is far from over,” said Rep. Jason Lowe. “The newly identified Omicron variant is a reminder that we must stay vigilant in maintaining health and safety measures like frequent hand-washing, quarantining after exposure, wearing masks in confined spaces, and getting the vaccine or booster shots.”
Researchers in South Africa and around the world are working to understand more about the Omicron variant as there is still little known about its symptoms, transmission, and severity. The message remains clear from scientists and healthcare professionals that until we know more about the dangers of the Omicron variant, taking basic precautions and prevention measures is necessary.
Lowe urges Oklahomans to follow updates relating to the Omicron variant and to do their part to protect their communities.
“While news of a new COVID-19 variant is unsettling, through dealing with the pandemic over the past two years, we know what works, which is following the recommendations and guidelines given by the CDC, the Oklahoma State Department of Health, and dedicated healthcare professionals,” Lowe said.
