Free Concert and Hog Hunt final weigh-in still set for Saturday
Lindsay’s inaugural Hawg Harvest hog hunt is already in full swing, but the city’s Fall Festival slated to wrap up the weeklong event on Saturday has been canceled due to the threat of rain.
Kim Griffith, event coordinator for the city, said the decision to cancel the festival activities planned for Main Street was made Tuesday based on the 80 percent chance of rain forecast for the area Saturday.
“Hopefully we can reschedule the festival event for a later date,” Griffith said.
City Manager Rebecca Niernberger said the rain wasn't necessarily the issue for the City but rather the number of vendors that had already canceled due to the forecast.
Niernberger told the City Council during a special meeting Friday afternoon the DJ hired for the event will not participate if the chance of rain is greater than 25 percent. She said other ride and amusement vendors had also canceled for similar reasons.
"When we got to 50 percent cancellation we made the decision, rather than spend the money and commit. If there was rain we'd be out the money, but if we called it early we'd be able to save that money and not pay it out," Niernberger said.
The city still plans to hold a free concert in Glenn Curlee Park starting at 5 p.m. Saturday. The concert will feature Cody Canada and the Departed, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, and Cody Hibbard.
The Hawg Harvest hog hunt will continue as planned. The weeklong hunt for feral hogs kicked off Sept. 25. Daily weigh-ins in the competition for Biggest Pig will continue through Saturday. As of Friday Morning, the team Pig Patrol was in the lead with a hog weighing in at 293 pounds.
Participating hog hunters will also compete for the Most Pigs, by weight, in a 24-hour contest running from 1 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. Final weigh-in will be at 1 p.m. Saturday on Main Street in Lindsay.
