Chickasaw Nation offers no-cost rabies clinics to First American pet owners

The Chickasaw Nation has scheduled no-cost rabies clinics for First American pet owners at several locations across Southern Oklahoma over the next several weeks.

“The rabies vaccine offered at the Chickasaw Nation Area Office rabies clinics, helps protect not only our canine companions but also the people who love them,” Deborah Hook, director of regional area offices, said.

These clinics are available at key locations within the Chickasaw Nation. First Americans owning cats, dogs and ferrets are provided rabies shots for their animals at no cost.

Rabies is almost always fatal in animals, but it is 100% preventable through vaccination. Vaccinations stop the transfer of the rabies virus to other animals and, ultimately, people. The Chickasaw Nation rabies clinics keep pets healthy while also serving communities’ public health needs.

Rabies vaccinations are required by law in Oklahoma for pets 4 months and older. Vaccinations must be given by a veterinarian, with proof of vaccination for the animal. Other local and county statutes may apply.

The drive-thru clinics will be on a first-come, firstserved basis. Animals will be vaccinated in the vehicle.

Animal owners are required to bring their CDIB or tribal citizenship card. Animals must belong to the person presenting the CDIB or citizenship card.

“The area offices use local veterinarians to give the vaccines, providing them with the paperwork and the pet owner with proper documentation,” Hook said.
