Bookmark designs net top honors for ECP students

Elmore City-Pernell Middle School students Sarah Johnson, Leah Cornforth and Addi Loriss were recently named as three of the seven winning entries in the Oklahoma Shift Bookmark Design Challenge sponsored by the Oklahoma Citizens for Education.

The winners were chosen from hundreds of entries from students in kindergarten through eighth grade, based on creativity, originality and their ability to express the importance of reading in a meaningful way.

As official winners, all three ECP students had their designs printed and the bookmarks will be distributed at bookstores, libraries, schools and community spaces around the state.

“This initiative was created to celebrate the powerful connection between art, literacy, and student voice, and the creativity we saw from Oklahoma students was truly outstanding. We also recognized two honorable mentions and received an incredible amount of thoughtful, high-quality artwork,” Oklahoma Citizens for Education said in announcing the winners on their website March 31.

According to the OCE website, the contest is intended to celebrate reading across Oklahoma by encouraging students to engage with reading, creating opportunities for expression, connecting schools with community and reminding everyone why literacy matters.
