A day of conservation and family fun will take place at the Chickasaw Cultural Center Saturday, Sept. 12, during the center’s 10th annual Monarch Butterfly Day.
In addition to the regularly scheduled activities offered between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Chickasaw Cultural Center guests will have the opportunity to participate in butterfly-themed horticultural activities. Visitors will learn how to help ensure the survival of the monarch butterfly for generations to come.
Events throughout the day will include hands-on activities with expert conservationists, a butterfly tent with giveaways of native Oklahoma plants and painted lady caterpillars, as well as additional activities and films. Stomp dance demonstrations will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
To continue the theme of celebrating butterflies, the Aaimpa’ Café will have a Monarch Butterfly Day-inspired salad and cookie for Saturday’s special.
Visitors are invited to view the Butterfly Garden, an ideal habitat for butterflies and other native pollinators filled with nectar-producing plants and winter cover. Monarch butterflies enjoy the garden as they migrate between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
The garden features native plants, and has large butterfly statues and an educational panel to help guests learn more about the monarch butterfly and the Chickasaw Cultural Center’s conservation efforts to aid in restoring their population.
The hatalhposhik (butterfly) is significant to the Chickasaw people, representing resilience and adaptability.
